Founded in 1969, the Louis B. Mayer Library is a reading, reference and research library designed to provide information and research resources to the Fellows, Faculty and Staff of AFI. The Library is located on the second floor of the Library Building housing a number of collections and resources to compliment the AFI Conservatory. In addition to the selection of books and current magazines on film and television there are number of specialized resources to help Fellows study the art of filmmaking. The Jack Haley Jr. Film/Video Study Center contains over 5,000 circulating videos and DVDs of classic and contemporary films and television programming. Over 5,000 unpublished scripts from classic and contemporary film and television programming including the Charles W. Fries Tele-feature Library of scripts of made for television movies and miniseries. The Library maintains a complete collection audiotapes and transcripts of AFI Conservatory seminars held since the founding of the AFI Conservatory. The Library makes available materials on the AFI Conservatory required reading and viewing list.

There are a number of policies designed to make the Library experience a positive one for all users:
* AFI photo ID is required for all services.
* All briefcases, backpacks and other packages must be left in the shelves before entering the Ahmanson Special Collections Room.
* Cameras and other recording devices are not permitted in the Library.
* No food or drink is allowed in Library.
* PRODUCTION MEETINGS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE LIBRARY.
* CELL PHONE USE IS NOT ALLOWED IN THE LIBRARY.
When a staff member asks you to comply with any of these policies please do so.
Library collections and materials are designed to compliment Conservatory studies with the following rules and regulations to help makes materials available to all. Fellows are limited to 3 videos and DVDs total at any one time, which circulate for 3 days and may be renewed up to a maximum of two times (in person or by telephone) when not required by another user. Magazines may not be taken from the Library. There is no limit on the number of books that can be checked out and they circulate for two weeks. Fines for overdue or unreturned items is $2.00 per day per video, with a maximum of $20.00 per video and 25 cents per day per book up to a maximum of $10.00 per books. A replacement fee is charged for lost items. UNPUBLISHED SCRIPTS DO NOT CIRCULATE TO ANY USER AND MAY NOT BE COPIED (MECHANICALLY OR OTHERWISE) FOR ANY REASON BY ANY USER. All seminar materials must be used in the Library, no copying is allowed. All use of Special Collections materials must be arranged with the Librarian.
There is a self-service photocopier available in the Library. Copies are ten cents per page and may not be charged to copies budget available to Screenwriting Fellows and Second Year Productions. Computers with Internet access and production software and a printer are available for Fellows use. A very limited number of outlets are available for lap top computers.
Electronic Resources: The Library makes available a number of entertainment directories and full text electronic resources (Lone Eagle directories, Electric Library, Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe). Information about accessing these resources can be found on the AFI Intranet (www.afintranet.org) or a handout available from the Library. (Due to contractual agreements certain restrictions apply). Computers for Fellows use only are available in the Library.
Due to a special reciprocal agreement AFI Fellows are eligible for library privileges at the University of Southern California Libraries. To obtain a USC Library card you must present you AFI ID at the main library.
Monday through Thursday Library is Open Until 9:00PM to Current AFI Fellows, Faculty and Staff
The Mayer Library is open to current AFI Fellows, Faculty and Staff ONLY. Please present your AFI photo ID to the person at the desk as you enter.
Not all Library facilities and services are open or available after 5:00PM
The following services are available:
1. PAGING and CHECKOUT of videos and DVDs only. Staff offices are closed after 5:00PM. If you wish to check out a video or DVD please request from the desk and it will be retrieved.
CHECKOUT STOPS AT 10 MINUTES TO THE HOUR.
2. Computer Workstations and printer (no technical assistance is available)
3. Photocopier (cannot be charged to Production or Fellows Accounts)
4. Viewing and Listening Stations
5. Seminar Tapes and Transcripts
6. Current Periodicals
7. Checkout of Books on open shelving in Feldman Reading Room and Ahmanson Special Collections Room. CHECK OUT STOPS AT 10 MINUTES TO THE HOUR.

1. Special Collections or Archive Materials
2. Some Television and Film Scripts shelved in remote storage.
3. Thesis and Cycle Project Materials
